What's an aircheck?
A nd why is it important? This is a form of direct training for radio announcers. These are typically facilitated by a program director, consultant, or other broadcaster with significant broadcast experience. It’s one of the only solid ways to “coach” radio announcers. A proper aircheck session includes honest feedback on an announcer’s on air performance.
Airchecks should include positive feedback, constructive criticism, and clear goals that the announcer should work towards. Believe it or not, MOST announcers want to know how he or she is performing. They are constantly craving feedback. They want to improve their craft. Having someone like me, who is out side of the station (and out of the market) can hear things that the announcer (or program director) may not catch or observe.
- Locality
- Topicality
- Personality
- Teases and Cross Promotes
- Elements
I will demonstrate the many ways to implement these, no matter what format an announcer works with. When these Five Key Factors are touched multiple times, in certain ways, with every show, announcers will connect with their audience.
They will bring value to the airwaves. They will increase their presence in the marketplace. They will build a name for themselves AND the radio station.
PAUL DUPUIS
W ith over 30 years in Maine broadcast radio (WHSN, WCDQ, WHOU, WHMX, WQCB, WBFB, WRMO, WNSX), Paul has experience in virtually every position and department in radio broadcasting. What makes Paul different from other coaches/consultants? For starters, he’s still working in local, small market radio! ( See my latest work ).
Many large market consultants are not in touch with small market radio. Many have been retired for a long time and don’t have that “front seat perspective” that Paul has. Many also try to use large market strategies that just don’t work in small market radio.

When you live radio everyday you can lose sight of what is working and what isn't. I asked Paul to work with all of our DJ's and the results were fantastic! Paul has a great way of focusing the DJs on their strengths while, at the same time, adjusting those items that need to change. Not only have we noticed an improved placement in our market, but also an improvement to our sales! I highly recommend that you call Paul today! So glad we did.
